What are the benefits of a crown?
A dental crown is a cap for your damaged tooth. It is made from a variety of materials including metal or porcelain. You may have a crown over a molar, but they rarely show unless you yawn, or you may have crowns on your front teeth that were custom-created and designed to match your natural teeth. Several factors are considered when choosing a crown for a patient, these include:
• Cost
• Strength
• Durability
• Cosmetics
For many, a dental crown with a natural appearance is very important, as they prefer not to have others know they have a dental crown. Dr. Victoria Vuong, DDS, can discuss the various options available to you to help determine what will best meet your needs for oral health.
As previously stated, there are several types of different materials that can be used to create a dental crown, they include:
• Porcelain
• Ceramic
• Zirconia
• Metal
• Composite resin
• Or a combination of materials
When selecting which material to use for your dental crown, Dr. Victoria Vuong, DDS, will take the following factors into consideration:
• Tooth’s location
• How much of the affected tooth will show when you smile?
• Position your gum tissue in your mouth
• Function of the affected tooth that needs the dental crown
• How much of the affected tooth is remaining?
• And the color of the surrounding teeth
There are a few different types of dental crowns that your dentist may recommend:
• Temporary crown
A temporary dental crown is exactly that—temporary. It will remain in your mouth for a short period of time. Dr. Victoria Vuong, DDS, will place it over your affected tooth with an adhesive that can be easily removed when it’s time, typically while you are waiting for the permanent crown to be made. Your permanent crown will be placed on your affected tooth at your second appointment.
• One-day crown
One-day crowns are getting a crown placed in a single appointment. If the dental office uses methods involving computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing, then your crown will be designed and customized from a block of ceramic in the clinic that day.
• Onlay or ¾ crown
Some dental crowns only need to cover a small section of the affected tooth, due to this, your dentist may suggest an inlay or a ¾ crown instead.
A dental crown may be necessary if you have a large cavity that is too large for a dental filling to be completed. You may also need a dental crown if your tooth is:
• Severely worn down
• Cracked
• Weakened
Crowns are highly recommended following a root canal on a tooth, due to the tooth being more fragile and needing extra protection.
Depending if you will be having a multi-day dental crown procedure or a same-day dental crown procedure, the dental crown appointment will go like this:
Step 1: Identify the cavity or affected tooth and clean it up
Step 2: Trim the tooth, creating a good base for the crown to fit on
Step 3: Place the temporary crown on top, and once the permanent crown is completed, a temporary crown will be removed and replaced with the permanent crown.
There are multiple benefits of receiving a dental crown, they include:
• Holding the cracked tooth or damaged teeth together
• Replacing a large or any worn-out fillings
• Restoring fractured or cracked teeth
• Restoring dental implants
• Improving the appearance of the patient’s teeth
• Reshaping the patient’s teeth
• Protecting the affected tooth/teeth after a root canal procedure
