Gum disease can be difficult to identify on your own which is why it’s always best to consult with your trusted dental practitioner if you’re exhibiting warning signs such as gum soreness and bleeding, tooth sensitivity, receding gums, tooth looseness, or pain while brushing and/or flossing. To determine if you have gum disease, Dr. Victoria Vuong DDS & Dr. Henry Chang DDS will perform a thorough examination. Once confirmed, they will design a treatment plan to address the issue in the safest, most effective, and most affordable way.
There are two primary stages of gum disease. They are:
• Gingivitis (early-stage gum disease). In this stage of gum disease, symptoms are relatively minor, including swollen, bleeding gums. Some patients, experience no symptoms at all. With timely and consistent treatments, this condition is highly reversible.
• Periodontitis (advanced gum disease). This is a more severe type of gum disease that occurs when the inner layer of the gums pulls away from the teeth and forms pockets. The result is the deterioration of the bone supporting the teeth which can cause pain, sensitivity, and tooth loss. There are multiple types of periodontitis, including:
• Chronic periodontitis. Characterized by gum recession and the formation of pockets. While it can occur at any age, it’s most common in adults.
• Aggressive periodontitis. Characterized by rapid deterioration of gums and bone.
• System disease periodontitis. Typically begins in the younger years and is correlated with heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory diseases.
• Necrotizing periodontal disease. Characterized by the death of gum tissue, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bones, which causes lesions along the gums. It is typically found in those suffering from systemic conditions such as HIV, malnutrition, and immunosuppression.
The answer to this question depends on how severe your gum disease is, any bone grafts or surgical repair that is needed, and how well you adhere to the oral health guidelines laid out by your dental practitioner.
For those suffering from gingivitis, a less severe form of gum disease, the average time of remission is about 10 to 14 days following your treatment. This must coincide with proper oral healthcare at home.
For those who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, the condition is unfortunately non-reversible. However, it can be successfully treated to prevent the condition from worsening. This process can take anywhere from weeks to months depending on the level of bone loss and the treatment plan laid out by your dental specialist.
Insurance may cover gum disease depending on your provider and the guidelines laid out in your unique dental plan. Treatments such as scaling and root planning may be covered, or partially covered by your dental plan. However, if you require a more substantial treatment such as surgery, it’s unlikely to be covered.
The best way to know if gum disease treatment will be covered by your insurance provider is to contact them directly or to have your dental office contact them on your behalf.
Gum disease treatment costs will vary depending on the severity of your condition, the type of treatment required, where and how experienced your dentist is, and if you have coverage.
Without insurance, you can expect treatment to cost anywhere from $500 to $5000 depending on how severe your gum disease is and the level of treatment needed. In some cases, your primary dentist may perform the initial diagnosis and treatment. However, many practitioners choose to refer patients to a gum disease specialist (a periodontist) that has years of additional experience and targeted training when it comes to more complex issues.
