Dental implants provide an affordable alternative to other tooth replacement options that may have repeated treatments, especially when the long-term cost-effectiveness and quality of life are taken into account. The total cost of an implant is dependent on:
• The number of teeth that have to be replaced
• Where the teeth are located
• The number and type of implants
• Any additional procedures required
Costs will vary as not only are dental implant treatments customized to the individual but there are also many variables. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), these costs are due to a number of factors that include the costs of state-of-the-art technology, the membership fees of governing bodies, and general operating costs, not to mention the costs associated with the many years of college prior to qualification.
The total cost of a single tooth implant including the post, abutment, and crown (all of which are priced separately) is estimated to be between $3,100 to $5,800. The top end of this figure would include any other necessary procedures such as a sinus augmentation.
If a person wants to replace multiple adjacent teeth, they will have more options to choose from. For example, implants that support three or four adjacent teeth would cost less than having three or four individual implants. Estimates for a multiple-tooth implant are between $6,000 and $10,000.
There is a wide range of pricing options for full mouth implants because of the different ways it can be done. The most expensive way is by replacing the teeth individually. This is the best option in terms of comfort for the patient, together with giving the dentist the option of preserving some of the existing teeth, if possible. This option typically runs from $60,000 to $90,000. The less expensive option is denture implants – basically full upper and lower sets of dentures that are supported by implants. This is also known as an All-on-4® treatment and estimates range between $24,000 to $50,000 for a complete set.
Any additional costs involved in a dental implant treatment will usually be discussed in the initial consultation(s) so there are unlikely to be any surprises. Services like 3D imaging, tooth extraction, sinus augmentation, bone grafting, and gum grafting are procedures that may be included in the treatment, but these should all be taken into consideration in the initial discussions and included in the overall treatment costs. The only additional, unforeseen expenses that may be incurred are prescription or over-the-counter medications, like painkillers or antibiotics.
Dental insurers have not typically covered the costs of dental implants as they were deemed to be an elective, cosmetic treatment. However, this is gradually changing, and the amount that dental plans cover is growing year on year. Dental insurance will now cover a portion of the total cost of implants. There may be a cap on the dollar reimbursement amount in a given calendar year or possibly a lifetime cap for certain procedures. Be sure to check with your insurance provider or administrator before you start treatment so that you are fully aware of the costs, and what portion you will be responsible for. In some cases, the dentist’s office will send a pre-authorization to the insurance company detailing the treatment and its associated costs to check what will, and will not, be covered.
